Low-water-content heating saves energy on London’s South Bank

Aesthetic and energy-efficient heating for the Coin Street neighbourhood centre in London is provided by Jaga low-H2O trench heating.
Quick-response energy-saving heating for a major new neighbourhood centre on London’s South Bank is provided by Jaga low-water-content Mini Canal trench heaters and Strada radiators. The Coin Street neighbourhood centre is a £9.55 million mixed-used development. There is a 64-place day nursery with 12-place crèche; facilities to house programmes for young people, parents and children; top-quality conference, meeting and event spaces for community and commercial hire; offices for Coin Street staff; roof terrace with views across the London skyline and a neighbourhood café and commercial restaurant. Architects Haworth Tompkins have incorporated solar chimneys to provide natural ventilation, rainwater collection to flush WCs, solar water heating and controls to dim and turn off lights. The Jaga low H2O heat emitters have about a tenth of the weight and water content of a traditional radiator. Rooms are heated to the desired temperature three times faster then with an ordinary radiator. The heat emitters also cool more quickly, so that heat is not wasted. Temperatures are held steady, and annual energy savings of around 10% are claimed. Strada radiators also have a low flow temperature. Michael Cheetham of Max Fordham LLP, the mechanical and electrical specifier for the project, said, ‘Given the open-plan design for this building and the fact that much of it features floor-to-ceiling glazing, trench heating was the only practical space-heating option available. Having specified Jaga’s trench heaters for a previous project, we knew we could achieve the output required and the right aesthetics with this product. In toilets and meeting-room areas, Strada radiators were specified for their aesthetics, with low H2O technology being another benefit.
