Morfitts completes another Odeon cinema

Following on from the Odeon cinema in Wrexham, Morfitts has completed the £2 million M&E contact for the new Odeon at Metrocentre Qube near Newcastle Upon Tyne. One of the major features in the 24-week project was the installation of the digital IMAX screen. Morfitts worked with the manufacturer and tested the screen to ensure the required level of visual and surround-sound effects were produced. Morfitts was also responsible for the complex electrical installations of the 11 digital and 3-D screens in this new Odeon cinema

The project also involved the installation of high-specification building services in the foyer, auditoria seating 2700 people, public and back-of-house areas. Full heating and cooling to each auditorium is provided by 15 roof-mounted air-handling units.

Fire safety includes a large sprinkler system, voice evacuation and emergency lighting. There is also a disabled refuge call systems and a digital induction-loop sound system.

An extensive ductwork system was installed, with an air-sampling fire-detection system in the roof void.

Mick Booth, Morfitts’ site manager for the project, says, ‘The location of the cinema and the timeframe it needed to be completed within meant that this was a very challenging and complex project. Our previous experience of working with the Odeon team proved invaluable, and we are delighted to see the cinema open and being enjoyed by the public.’
