Kanmor controller helps hotel win green energy award

This biomass boiler is one of two boilers, the other being oil, that is controlled by a Kanmor weather-compensated heating controller.

Kanmor Control Systems’ 264e weather-compensated heating control is in charge of a wood-pellet boiler and oil-fired condensing boiler in the listed Rectory Hotel in Crudwell, Wiltshire. The system was installed by Cotswold Efficient Energy Centre and won an award as Renewable Energy Project of the Year.

Andy Buchan, managing director of the Energy Centre explains, ‘We tendered for the job against three rivals and were awarded the contract chiefly because we put forward a carbon-neutral heating system. We chose the 264e controller because it was the only one we were aware of that would automatically operate a wood-pellet boiler and also fire up an oil condensing boiler when it was needed to meet increased heating and hot-water demand during the Winter months.’

This controller can initiate any one of up to four different heat sources depending on optimum conditions. For this project, the controller was set to bring in the oil boiler if the biomass boiler could not achieve a flow temperature of 50°C within 45 minutes.

Sensors in the pipework operate motorised valves on the various boiler circuits. Boiler differential is adjusted automatically to improve efficiency. When the boiler is shut down during warm weather, key components are exercised during periods of inactivity.
