Birchall contract signals start of redevelopment of New Street Station in Birmingham

Birchall, contractor

Building-services provider Birchall was awarded the £500 000 contract by Network Rail to provide an enabling-works package for the new Birmingham Gateway scheme. The work involved stripping out and diverting existing M&E services for the existing New Street Station and the adjoining Pallasades Shopping Centre as the first step in delivering an iconic world-class transport hub for the Midlands by 2015.

Birchall worked with principal contractor Mace on the 4-month enabling project, which was completed at the end of last year.

Director Ian Birchall commented, ‘The contract resulted from our long experience of providing services from small works to ongoing maintenance as an approved Network Rail contractors. All the work was carried out while New Street Station remained fully operational.’
