Turbomiser chillers slash cooling energy use at a data centre

Energy savings of 55% have been achieved following the replacement of existing cooling plant with new Turbomiser chillers at the west London data centre of Colt Technology. The new chillers have also improved reliability and reduced maintenance costs. Colt Data Centre Services asked Cool-Therm to provide a turnkey package, matching the existing cooling load of the data centre and maintaining cooling at all times during the changeover. Six chillers were installed, and Cool-Therm advised that the most efficient method of operation would be to run them all together under inverter control, at the same time maximising condenser efficiency by using all the heat-exchanger surfaces to reject heat. Operating efficiency was also improved by increasing the flow/return chilled-water temperatures from 6/12°C to 8/14°C. A monitoring system was installed to compare energy consumption against the previous system.
