Waterloo continues to rebuild itself in the UK

Active chilled beams are already an energy-efficient approach to providing air conditioning, but Waterloo Air Products is looking to increase their performance by 50% by increasing the induction of room air.

Waterloo Air Products is continuing to re-establish itself in the UK air-conditioning market with the recent opening of a northern office, extending its technical capabilities by investing in staff and facilities and developing new products.

Archie Coulson, who became chairman of the company when it was set up three years ago tells us that the targets of efficiency and fast turnaround have been achieved and that the company is now also ready to develop itself in other European markets, having participated at ISH in Germany earlier this year.

‘Part of our aim,’ he says, ‘is to become established with major M&E contractors, having systematically developed our sales team across the UK.

New-product development continues, with innovations in swirl diffusers, barrel slot diffusers and active chilled beams.

One of the key aims in active chilled beams is to increase the amount of cooling they can deliver, says technical manager Wander ter Kuile. These beams use primary air to draw air from the space through the chilled-water cooling coil and increase the amount of cooling that is provided. he explains, ‘Under normal operating conditions, an active chilled beam can induce an additional three times more cooling capacity than the amount of primary air supplied. This provides a substantial saving in life-cycle cost compared to a conventional HVAC system and is energy efficient, helping to comply with Part L.’

Wander ter Kuile identifies three approaches to improving the design of active chilled beams.

• Increase coil efficiency.
• Improve induction ratio.
• increase operating flexibility using variable nozzle geometry.

The target is to raise the induction ratio to five — increasing the amount of cooling that can be provided using this technology or enabling fewer beams to be installed.

To verify the performance that Waterloo quotes in its chilled-beam literature, they are tested at BSRIA.
