District heating from the Aylesbury Estate in Southward is brought to Walworth Academy by CPV pre-insulated steel pipe.

District heating has been brought to a school in Southwark, London, using 700 m of 125 mm-diameter CPV Hiline steel pre-insulated pipe to connect it to the local district-heating scheme. The scheme serves the rebuilding and expansion of Walworth Academy’s facilities, which include a state-of-the-art study environment for engineering, science, technology and mathematics.

The heating system also supplies a sports hall, performance area, entrance and atrium.

The Hiline pipe system was selected to meet the strict specifications of thermal efficiency, durability and strength stipulated in Southwark Council’s project brief.

The installation includes a leak-detection alarm monitoring system and was carried out by T. Brown Group.

At one point near the academy buildings, obstructions forced a deviation from the planned pipe route, requiring a special section of pipework to be fabricated. CPV acted swiftly to keep the project ahead of schedule.

The supply pipes operate at 2 bar to deliver hot water from a pair of Rycroft shell-and-tube heat exchangers in a new plant room. They are supplied by a boiler house dating back to the late 1960s when it was constructed to feed into the Aylesbury Housing Estate MTHW district-heating scheme.
