LG prepares to take back air-conditioning
A ‘green charter’ produced by LG and running to 20 lavishly illustrated pages shows that the company is well on the road towards a ‘take-back’ strategy and end-of-life recycling of air-conditioning equipment. H. Y. Nho, president of LG’s air-conditioning division, says, ‘The enforcement of the EU WEEE Directive has accelerated the expansion of end-of-life product take-back regulations throughout the world. A present, many governments in various regions are trying to finalise their own take-back legislation. LG has been in the process of establishing such legislation and has supported the introduction of take-back systems that are economically viable.’ LG’s emissions of carbon dioxide have been steadily falling over the last five years — despite increasing output. In 2004, manufacturing an average air-conditioning unit produced 5.5 kg of carbon dioxide. By 2007, that figure was down to 3.9 kg, and the aim for 2008 is to achieve 2.9 kg. LG’s total emissions of carbon dioxide are down by about 20% over the period and are expected to fall yet again this year despite booming output.
