Refurbishment provides a lesson in fuel efficiency

Substantial energy savings are expected at Ashville College following the refurbishment of a 27-year-old heating system to include Buderus condensing boilers.

Existing 27-year-old boilers at Ashville College in Harrogate have been replaced with Buderus condensing boilers to meet the heating requirements of the entire senior-school building. The two GB312 boilers have an output of 200 kW and replace two 300 kW cast-iron boilers.

Neil Parker, estate manager at the school, says, ‘we are expecting big savings in fuel bills and a big improvement in the controlled comfort to all rooms.

‘Because of the long history of the school, floor levels vary considerably and have been subject to many alterations during the course of time, so a decision was made to completely renew the pipework throughout — including radiators, TRVs and increased levels of insulation to provide a versatile and well controlled installation.’

The school’s building-management team and heating contractor Robinsons M&E of Harrogate decided to replace the old boilers, which were presenting problems with servicing and spares availability. The economies of a new system were apparent, and the work was carried out during the summer.

This new heating system is part of a £6 million campus upgrade programme.
