Library refurbishment benefits from multi-service chilled beams

Trox
Multi-service chilled beams from Trox have optimised limited headroom in the refurbishment of a library at the University of Leicester.

The limited headroom available in the refurbished David Wilson Library in the University of Leicester has been optimise using exposed ventilation multi-service chilled beams supplied by Trox. The library has coffered ceiling detail that limits services access throughout the building. Its refurbishment has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

In a £400 000 project, Trox provided 930 linear metres of exposed DID300 multi-service chilled beams incorporating building services into a single raft. Services were designed to penetrate concrete downstand beams while maintaining a continuous fascia detail.

These beams incorporate specially designed wing profiles made from architectural extruded aluminium. They include lighting and plena for primary air supply.

M&E consultant for the £32 million project to refurbish and extend the library was Aecom, with Bailey Building Services as contractor. The extension has increased the floor area from 7950 m2 in the original library built in 1975 to 15 500 m2.
